The Texas African American Family Quilt Project

The Texas African American Family Quilt Project will cite to create an audio/written catalog of authentic African American quilts made or held by African Americans in Texas from early times to the early 70's.   This quilt project documentation, a highlight of African American Texan quilts and their makers will provide written, photographic and audio records of individual quilts and the quilt  maker  artist.

This  historical record of fabric art form will be  a great addition to the antiquity of  African Americans in Texas History.

The TAAFQP project goals are:

  • To document in detail all types of quilts made in different periods in Texas with photographs, measurements, and other historic style and quilt type information.
  • To document African American quilt makers, their profile and quilting art form.
  • To assist quilt owners in identifying and maintaining the history of family quilts.
  • To develop appreciation for quilting as an important expressive artistic form.
  • To preserve historic Texas African American quilts documentation.
  • To collect representative information on quilts from all areas of the state in order to develop a traveling statewide exhibition and a publication on African American quilts from Texas
  • To institute quilt clinics to document and photograph quilts

History is best preserved when it is officially documented. Quilts have been in families for ions of years.  Their stories are usually passed down with each quilt. As the years go by, the value of the quilt is increased as the documentation (photographs, stories, ownership, etc.) increases for each quilt.  Through the maintenance and retaining of historical documentation, the significance of the family heirloom ensures that the quilt will not be casually discarded as worthless in the future.

Quilt Documentation

All information regarding the quilt, the quilt maker,  and the  quilt history will provide the best documentation.  The size,  quilt type (if known), construction of top, batting, and backing, any appliques,  special binding and borders should be provided.

Quilt Photography

Photograph  the  entire  quilt  front and back showing  all edges.   Special blocks or unique features should also be  photographed with detail.    Preferably,  hang  quilt  for  documentation      photography. Photograph with as much natural light as  possible to  represent  the  authentic  appearance  of  the  quilt.

High  Resolution  photography is highly recommended.

All photographs will be accepted.
